Hotpoint Washing Machine Repairs Error Codes

Hotpoint washing machines are among the most common found in the Uk and like any mechanical device they will occasionally breakdown or develop a fault and need repairs. Being a very popular make means that most parts supplier will keep there parts in stock and because so many suppliers keep Hotpoint parts stock this also drives competition hence driving down the price of parts if you should ever need them

One problem many people including some engineers face when faced with a faulty Hotpoint washer is knowing what the error code mean, so here are a list of error codes and there meanings for Hotpoint washing machines

These error codes can some times have a E in front of the number and not a F as shown here, but the meaning of the code is still the same

# F10 - This means there is No cold fill. You should check and verify that the taps are on or the hoses are kinked.

# F11 - This means there is No hot fill. The ambient temperature is probably below freezing perhaps due to the plumbing becoming frozen. Also verify that the taps are on or if the drain hoses are kinked.

# F12 - This means No mixed fill. It is most likely that the water is not turned on usually under the sink taps.

# F13 - For this error code you should check the water supply, inlet control device as well as hot and cold hose pipe connections.

# F14 - A This error code means a problem with the water heating system has taken place. You will need to book a washing machine repair

# F15 - Water is not getting pumped away and a flood situation can take place. Verify that the discharge hose is elevated to the advised minimum height and that the pipe is not blocked.

# F17 - Door not closed properly. Close door firmly and the machine should work OK now, if simply closing the door firmly does not fix the problem, you will need to find and book a washing machine repairs engineer.

# F20/1 - The actual thermistor resistance has drifted or the temperature scanning sequence is incorrect. The ambient temperature could be below freezing. You will need to Book a washing machine repair engineer.

# F30/31 - A motor drive problem has occurred. Try running the programme again. If the problem persists book a service engineer.

# F40 - Water was below the protection level during a heat step. You will need to Book a washing machine repair.

Washing Machine – Door Not Locking – Appliance Not Starting Hotpoint / Indesit Washing Machine

The workings of washing machines are quite simple if you know the sequence of operation. When you have selected the wash program, turned ON the machine, shut the door and press start (if you have one of the modern electronic machines), the door interlock light should come ON, if it doesn’t the machine will not start to fill, simple.

There are a couple of things to check when you discover that your washing machine is not starting the program.

DOOR LOCKED APPLIANCE NOT STARTING

1. Check to see if the door is locked BUT the program is not starting OR the door is electrically locked, the door lock light does not come, if this is the situation then there is a more possible chance that the wash motor brushes are worn or the wash motor itself is faulty. Most washing machine wiring is in series, that is the door interlock and the motor has to communicate. Replacing worn motor brushes should not be difficult. Most wash motors are located at the back bottom half of the machine.

2. Before attempting to do any kind of work on your appliance PLEASE turn OFF the appliance from the mains, and then unplug it. This is safer than just leaving it plugged in but turned OFF at the mains. Faulty electrical sockets have caused many electrocutions.
Current machines on the market uses stretch belt, this means it has no adjustment to tighten the drive. Remove the belt from the motor shaft, use 13mm socket spanner to remove the 2x bolts, the motor should now come out easily. Replace the worn motor brushes which is located on either side of the motor side.

DOOR NOT LOCKED

If the door does not lock at all, then there are two (2) possibilities. The first is a faulty door interlock, this is the mechanism that locks the door catch. The second is a possible faulty control module or timer. The door interlock can be replaced by removing the FRONT door seal band. With the second possible cause I will recommend you don’t attempt it, allow a qualified technician to attend.

Washing Machine - Leaking From Soap Dispenser

As a field service engineer or washing machine repair man per say, I have come across a lot of appliances leaking from the soap dispenser. Some of the faults can be easily solved while others will need the attention of a service engineer.

There are mainly (2)two types of soap dispenser leak, now allow me to walk you through this.

1. The first is if during water intake or filling proccess, water begin to leak from the dispenser, you either have a blocked dispenser hose or your water pressure is too high. Blocked dispenser hoses is caused by low water pressure, the washed detergent is not washed fast enough into the drum and they get deposited in the dispenser hose. To clear the hose, TURN OFF the appliance from the mains, unplug it, remove the top lid, locate the dispenser hose and then squeeze to unclog the soap powder. That should solve the problem, oh by the way blocked fabric conditioner compartment can also cause leakage.

To reduce your water pressure, locate the inlet water valve, this is mostly located under the sink unit or behind the washing machine. Turn the valve just to reduce the pressure BUT dont shut OFF the water supply.

2. If you are having water leak from the soap dispenser during the spin cycle then it is most likely you have a blocked sump OR blocked drain outlet this is attached to the drain point under the sink unit. If your washing machine has a filter in front, check the filter first and then the outlet.

After you have checked the points above and you still have leakage from the dispenser then it is time to call a service engineer.

I hope this infomation has helped, and please feel free to check out any of the adverts to seek for more help. Also read some of my older blogs.

Washing Machine Motors - Common Problems Related to Washing Machine Motors

Washing Machine Motor is a device used for driving the clothes in the washing machine and induces the machine to run at a predetermined speed.
It runs with the help of the AC induction motor and this is powered with the help of DC to AC inverter. It is situated on the lower body of the machine and the motor forces the belt to tumble the wash tub. The motor is responsible for the tumbling, rotating and washing of the clothes. It is a double speed capacitor that helps in running of the washing machine in an open induction system.
The motor is empowered with running at a low, medium and high level based on the requirement of washing. It is also assigned with the operation of spinning and drying the clothes. The machine is installed in the washing machine in a horizontal way and it is built up with high starting torque. It offera reliable operation and easy maintenance. It can be used in a fully automatic machine and also in the semi-automatic washing machine.
Types of Washing Machine Motors
Some of the types are heavy duty, single phase, three phase and explosion proof motors. Those with overload protection offer long tenure to the washing machines. Heavy duty version is used for washing machine to work on high loaded power.
The machines runs tough and stubborn and makes the spin tub to rotate faster. Heavy duty versions are mainly used for high voltage consumption washing machines. Single phase one consumes low power. Single phase type can be used for washing machines having separate units of washing.
For example single phase version is used in spinning machine and dryer machine. Three phase type has strong power voltage and works easier on tough current connections. The electricity power is used in an enhanced manner in the three phase versions.
Common related problems
Washing machine motors face the problem of out of order due to the high voltage electricity and overloading of clothes in the washing machine. Overloaded washing machines force the equipment to move swifter with a harder action and this leads to motor repair. It often faces the problem of a squealing noise and this is caused due to the lack of lubricate oil. Sometimes the belt of the washing machines does not rest upon the motor promptly and this causes improper tumbling of the washer tub.
Defective lid switch also results in the non-movement of the motor. The breakage results in the slow working of the motors. The couplers are made out of rubber and plastic and there are many chances for breakage. Defective running is also a common problem associated with the washing machines.
Some helpful tips
The motors of the washing machine should be rehauled and services should be conducted regularly with the guidance of the professional service person. In the process of removal, the electrical connections relating to the washing machine should be disconnected to ensure safety.
It is always prone to burning out. This is caused mainly due to the frequent and continuous usage of the washing machine. Overloading of clothes leads to repairs and these can be rectified by adopting some small steps in this regard, basically by using minimal quantity of clothes for washing and another tip is the washing machine should not be allowed to run continuously for a long time. Intervals are needed and this makes the motor to cool down. It should be replaced in case of continuous problem. It should not be overheated and minimal usage per day should be adopted.
Best quality should be purchased and for this the best brand of washing machine should be selected. Motors should be used in a manner to provide a long life to the washing machine. Leaking of water in the spin tub should be immediately attended to and repaired, otherwise it may lead to spoilage.
Continuous spilling of water over the motor results in the burning of the same. All the functions relating to the washing machine is mainly connected to the motor. It is considered as an essential part of the washing machine especially in the process of washing and rotating of the spin tub.

Washing Machine Repairs Home Help

When a washing machine breaks down, it can often feel like a emergency, but as an appliance engineer with years of experience, I have been called out to what are very minor problems. While I cannot go into great details here and there could be other reasons for the problem, I will present you with 3 common problems along with 3 possible and very simple solutions that do not require you to open the washing machine...
Always unplug the washing machine from the mains power supply before doing any work
1. If your washing machine will not fill up with water at the start of a wash, but you can hear a light humming noise coming from the back of the washer, as simple as this may sound, check the water as not been turned off, pots, pans, plates, boxes of soap and any other item in the cupboard where the taps are can get pushed up against the tap causing the tap to move to the off position, also especially if you have had work men round check every valve you can safely check before calling a engineer, I have personally been called out many times simply to find my self in the embarrassing position of having to charge our call out charge just to turn a tap back on.
2. If your washing machine will not empty the water or give a fast spin or the clothes are still wet at the end of the wash cycle, you may have a blockage or a faulty pump, blockages can be anywhere on the machine or in the out let drainage plumbing, so I will only go into the very basics here.
First, if you have one on your washer, Check the small filter at the bottom, front of your washer, the cap should unscrew with a simple anticlockwise turn, there maybe a lot of water in the washing machine that will try to escape and could lead to a lot of water on the floor, the trick here is to turn the cap slowly, in a manner that allows you to control the flow of water into a saucepan or bowl, stopping the water flow and emptying the saucepan or bowl as often as needed, once the washer is empty of water you can check inside the filter for any blockage
3. If the door of your washing machine will not open at the end of the wash cycle, again there could be many reasons for this, but a common reason is that the washer as detected that all the water as not emptied, so will keep the door locked to safe guard you from flooding, you can try to empty any water that may be left in the washing machine using the technique mention above for removing a blockage, once you have emptied all the water, there is a very good chance the interlock will release the door after the 2 or 3 minute safety delay
If you are unsure of any point you should call a engineer, we offer a FREE advice service and can also help with any repair needed
